Towards an AIDS free generation in Uganda (TAFU2)

Mutual learning at Uganda-Kenya paediatric HIV exchange visit

As part of the Aidsfonds linking and learning initiative Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK), Aidsfonds’ partner in Kenya for the INUKA! programme, visited the Towards and AIDS Free Generation in Uganda (TAFU) programme  in August 2019.

During this exchange visit, WOFAK had in-depth discussions with TAFU programme staff and local government representatives in Uganda. Furthermore they visited TAFU children and caregivers’ support groups as well as Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).

Key topics for discussion included stakeholder involvement and sustainability, working with community and religious leaders, how to best support community health workers, and how to ensure success of saving groups in order for children and their families to benefit. For example, apart from saving and borrowing, VSLAs can play a key role in identification, referral and support of children living with HIV when monitored properly by community health volunteers. As a result the INUKA! team further refined their approach to find and support children and pregnant women living with HIV in Kenya.

“This exchange visit was a highly enriching experience for us since we now have a clear understanding of what is expected of us if we’re to boast of a successful project. As we get into serious implementation of INUKA! programme, we will make effective use of the lessons learnt from TAFU.” Jackline Okinyi – INUKA! Project Coordinator at WOFAK

Aidsfonds Linking and learning initiative

The Aidsfonds Paediatric HIV linking and learning initiative aims to improve the community response for children living with or affected by HIV. We do this by facilitating learning exchanges between Aidsfonds’ implementing partners in different countries and to jointly generate evidence about sustainable community intervention models. This evidence will be used to inform and influence future programming, policies and strategies.
